Ayurveda is the ancient Indian system of natural and holistic medicine. When translated from Sanskrit, Ayurveda means “the science of life” (the Sanskrit root ayur means “longevity” or “life” and veda means “science”). While allopathic medicine tends to focus on the management of disease, Ayurveda provides us with the knowledge of how to prevent disease and how to eliminate its root cause if it does occur.
“Gurukula” system of education was the method of the Ayurveda training that was generally followed in ancient India. Ayurvedic colleges offer a graduate level degree—“Ayurvedacharya” (BAMS).
Ayurveda has the status of a medical system in Nepal. Full-fledged Ayurveda degree course of 5½ years is conducted by the Institute of Medicine in the premises of Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu.
Medical transcription, medical event management, medical journalism and documentation are also fields with a bright future. BAMS graduates can complete LLB and work as legal medical advisor.
The ayurveda sector in the country is poised to end this year with a landmark achievement,touching a gross market size of $4.4 billion.The Indian ayurveda industry is projected to record a CAGR of 16 per cent until 2025.
